Orthodontic Overview
How Orthodontic Treatment Works
Most people decide to receive orthodontic care so that they can enjoy a healthy, beautiful smile. You or your child may be self-conscious about your smile, or have other bite problems or jaw issues. Correcting these issues can improve your overall health and the way you look and feel.
Orthodontic braces and appliances gently, slowly, and constantly push your teeth in a carefully controlled direction until they are moved into the proper position. The braces and appliances are typically made of some combination of ceramic, metal, or plastic. They may be removable or they may be bonded to the teeth. Braces are the most common orthodontic treatment, and they are now available in a variety of colors or can be clear or even invisible. Even the wire that guides braces is much less noticeable today than in the past. Today, materials are designed to move teeth faster and with more comfort.
Duration of Treatment
Treatment time varies from person to person depending on age, treatment method, and the specifics of the case. Before beginning your orthodontic care, we will discuss all of your options and provide an estimate of how long your full treatment may take. One of the biggest factors in successful treatment is you! If you’re careful and follow all of the instructions, your treatment will be more efficient. For children, early treatment that involves a two-phase interceptive process can actually lessen the overall treatment time. Once your treatment is done, your smile will be bright, healthy, and confident!
