FAQ About Orthodontics

We want you to feel informed and confident, so we’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions about the basics of orthodontic care and what you can expect. Every patient case is unique, so we’ll provide more information as we develop a custom plan for you, taking time to answer your questions and ask some of our own.

How Does Orthodontic Treatment Work?

Most people decide to receive orthodontic care so that they can enjoy a healthy, beautiful smile. You or your child may be self-conscious about your smile, or have other bite problems or jaw issues. Correcting these issues can improve your overall health and the way you look and feel.

Orthodontic braces and appliances gently, slowly, and constantly push your teeth in a carefully controlled direction until they are moved into the proper position. The braces and appliances are typically made of some combination of ceramic, metal, or plastic. They may be removable or they may be bonded to the teeth. Braces are the most common orthodontic treatment, and they are now available in a variety of colors or can be clear or even invisible. Even the wire that guides braces is much less noticeable today than in the past. Today, materials are designed to move teeth faster and with more comfort.

What Is the Typical Duration of Treatment?

Treatment time varies from person to person depending on age, treatment method, and the specifics of the case. Before beginning your orthodontic care, we will discuss all of your options and provide an estimate of how long your full treatment may take. One of the biggest factors in successful treatment is you! If you’re careful and follow all of the instructions, your treatment will be more efficient.

For children, early treatment that involves a two-phase interceptive process can actually lessen the overall treatment time. Once your treatment is done, your smile will be bright, healthy, and confident!

What Is the Difference Between a Dentist vs. Orthodontist?

It is easy to get confused about the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist, as there can be areas of cross-over in the work they do. While a dentist and an orthodontist are both tasked with the improvement of a patient’s overall oral health, they have different roles.

How Are They Similar?

  • The main similarity between a dentist and orthodontist is that they are both medical professionals that complete many years of schooling and focus on teeth, gums, and overall oral health.
  • They work together in many instances as part of your oral health team.
  • Both are doctors and are graduates of dental school.

How Are They Different?

  • After graduating dental school, orthodontists must continue their education with several more years of highly-specialized instruction.
  • Dentists typically focus on a patient’s overall oral health and provide general checkups, routine cleanings, and services such as fillings, extractions, crowns, and gum procedures.
  • Orthodontists are dentists who specialize in the alignment of teeth and jaws. They provide services related to malocclusions, overbites, underbites, crossbites, crowding, and problems with the jaw.
